Domaine Fourrey Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2017
We can barely believe that a bonafide red Burgundy could be selling for this crazy price! If you have never tried a Burgundian pinot noir, this is your entry to a truly majestic world. Nowhere in the world can meld earthy notes with the typical fruity notes of pinot such as raspberry and strawberry like Burgundy.
This example is not between the eyes with intense upfront fruit like a NZ pinot on steroids, it just quietly announces its presence and slowly surrounds you with its subtle essence. It surreptitiously sneaks around from behind and gives you a long, warm hug. There’s hints of dirt and earth, raspberry, blackberry and cherry …but nothing thumps you on the nose like a grade 6 bully! It needs plenty of time in the decanter and keeps giving and giving. It’s silky smooth and has that superb, seductive Burgundian texture. You just realise at a point that your glass is empty, yet you never want the adventure to end.
This wine originates from an artisan vineyard run by the Fourrey family for 4 generations, based in Chablis, Burgundy. We tasted this in a nice bulbous Burgundy glass to best release its perfume. At our tasting, we food matched it with pan fried duck with plum sauce (click for recipe) which was a dreamy combo. This is a wine to be enjoyed now but may develop a few more layers over the next 3 or 4 years…but who can wait?! It is very limited so get some while you can!
